Latino institute emphasizes leadership, action and education

LYNNWOOD - The Latino Educational Training Institute's programs are focused on empowerment through education.

Rosario Reyes, president of the Lynnwood nonprofit, said the group works largely with Latino business owners and students. The organization is run by volunteers except for one part-time paid administrative assistant funded by United Way.

The institute has started three new programs or events during the past two years. One is geared toward networking for business owners and two are focused on education for Latino youth.

New SBA Initiatives Promote Lending in Underserved Communities
WASHINGTON - Dec. 16, 2010 - With small business owners and entrepreneurs in traditionally underserved communities continuing to face challenges accessing capital, the U.S. Small Business Administration today announced two new initiatives aimed at increasing SBA-backed loans to small businesses in these markets. SBA and U.S. Department of Commerce studies have shown the importance of lower-dollar loans to small business formation and growth in underserved communities. With that in mind, the two new loan initiatives - Small Loan Advantage and Community Advantage - are aimed at increasing the number of lower-dollar SBA 7(a) loans going to small businesses and entrepreneurs in underserved communities. The agency's most popular loan product, 7(a) government-guaranteed loans can be used for variety of general business purposes, including working capital and purchases of equipment and real estate.

In conjunction with the implementation of these two new Advantage loan initiatives by March 15, the agency will end its existing Community Express pilot loan program on April 30.

NW Group foments leadership training
A group of non-profits has combined with regional two-year colleges to create a young-adult leadership training program emphasizing the discovery of new leaders from the latino community.

The initial pilot program is taking place this spring in Mount Vernon, WA. Students are participating in workshops and completing a public service project in teams.

The kickoff session featured addresses by WA state representative Luis Moscoso (currently the only latino member of the house), and WA state supreme court justice Steve Gonzalez, the first person of latino background to serve on the court (the two appear at right and left, respectively in the accompanying photo.
Foro Comunitario 24 Oct. Community Forum
The public is invited to our LETI Community Forum on October 24, 2011. We will hand out the diplomas for the LETI classes completed and awards to our volunteer of the year and outstanding community volunteers.

We will give valuable information to the community. Topics include

  • the importance of science careers (salary, job availability)
  • the importance of computers and e-marketing
  • loan modifications and renters’ rights
  • immigration and police issues
  • legal issues affecting the Latino community
  • the importance of civic participation
  • education issues and high school drop out rates
  • business development

White House to Launch “Startup America” Initiative

Washington DC - January 31, 2011 - In his State of the Union Address, President Obama laid out a plan for winning the future by out-innovating, out-educating, and out-building the rest of the world. This week, the White House will hold a number of events to focus on innovation, and how we can create the jobs and industries of the future by investing in the creativity and imagination of the American people.

Today, the White House will launch “Startup America,” a national campaign to help America achieve these goals by promoting high-growth entrepreneurship across the country with new initiatives to help encourage private sector investment in job-creating startups and small firms, accelerate research, and address barriers to success for entrepreneurs and small businesses.
